1. It is just as important to prepare questions to ask the interviewer as it is to prepare answers in readiness for questions you feel you may be asked.
2. Research as much as you can about the prospective company; products, services, markets, competitors, trends, current activities and priorities.
3. With regard to your personal achievements in your career to date, try wherever possible to substantiate and quantify what you have done. Many interviews are now based on key role competencies and also require examples of workplace situations to illustrate your behaviour.
4. You may be asked to give specific examples of your experience or given a “scenario” in which you must explain how you would react or deal with a particular situation. Think about this before you attend your interview.
5. Where you can, always try to back up your achievements with “hard” evidence. For instance, if you have been responsible for increasing profit with your company, illustrate how this was done and present hard data that will clearly show the amount and time line.
6. Review your personal goals and be able to speak openly and honestly about them and how you plan to achieve them.
7. Personality and ability tests are now used widely by organisations to aid their selection and development processes. DSA are BPS accredited in the use of these tests and can offer advice to prospective candidates on the use and completion of a wide range of assessment tools. It is helpful to familiarise yourself with these tools and what may be presented to you.
8. Ensure that your CV is up to date and that any gaps can be explained. Do not fabricate the truth as it is highly likely that this will not fall in your favour.
9. Be prepared, enthusiastic and confident. Experience and ability will hold less significance if you present a nonchalant or negative attitude. Review your body language, your presentation skills and communication. If necessary, consider coaching to focus on these skills and improve your chances of success.
