Interview Skills in the NED Space  – how to make an impact

Interviewing for a Non-Executive Director role is different from interviewing for an executive appointment. The emphasis is less on what you have directly delivered and more on how you think, challenge, influence and contribute at board level.

Strong NED candidates usually demonstrate:

• Strategic judgement — showing that they can look beyond operational detail and consider the wider organisational, financial and reputational context.
• Constructive challenge — asking thoughtful questions, testing assumptions and offering challenge without appearing confrontational or overly critical.
• Governance awareness — understanding the distinction between oversight and management and being clear about the role of the board in scrutiny, accountability and support.
• Independence of thought — demonstrating the confidence to bring a different perspective while still working collaboratively with the Chair, board and executive team.
• Evidence-based contribution — using examples that show impact, judgement and decision-making rather than simply listing career achievements.
• Listening and presence — NED interviews often assess how a candidate engages with others, not just what they say. Being considered, concise and reflective is often more powerful than over-talking.
• Values and cultural fit — boards need people who can add diversity of thought while respecting the organisation’s purpose, stakeholders and long-term responsibilities.

A strong NED interview is not about proving you can run the organisation. It is about showing that you can help govern it well.
