Renewable energy offers a wide and constantly growing range of careers; wind, hydro, tidal/wave, solar, biofuels – all offering an alternative source of power generation.
Renewable energy is the fastest growing area in the energy sector and a recent government paper suggests that up to 35000 new jobs will be created in the next decade.
Being a relatively new sector, experience in renewables is not generally a pre-requisite and companies will often recruit from automobile, aerospace or similar technical backgrounds. To attract the best talent, remuneration is generally very competitive and certainly on a par with those offered in complimentary businesses.
Of course, the sector is driven by public concern and government policy and a genuine interest in this area and knowledge of current policies is of great benefit when considering a career in this market.
Indeed, the Government is legally committed to meeting 15% of the UK’s energy demand from renewable sources by 2020; this statement alone confirms the need to develop renewable energy sources and recruit and train professionals who can deliver this requirement.
